What do you get when you mix tapa cloth, face paint and traditional Fijian song & dance with the unbridled joy of a bunch of kids aged 3 - 12 years?  Some of Castaway Island Resort's proudest parents!

In March, my family and I had the privilege of visiting Castaway Island, Fiji.

I say privilege because it was not only beautiful but also so welcoming.   Kids club was a particular highlight for my two girls (and given that it operates from 9am to 10pm daily, an even bigger highlight for my husband and I!). Learning lots of interesting Fijian facts and a few words was fun, as was watching the Lovo pit being dug, making coconut toffee with the coconuts they’d gathered, collecting and racing crabs and the best part….the Meke.

This exceptionally well maintained resort is one of the most popular in the country, and it is easy to see why. Located on a 174 acre privately owned island, it is the perfect choice for romantic couples with or without children. The air-conditioned bures all feature traditional vaulted tapa-lined ceilings, garden or ocean-facing patios and a spacious, elegant design. Guest activities abound including snorkeling off the beach, PADI Five Star Gold Palm diving, surfing trips, catamaran sailing, kayaking, windsurfing, parasailing, hand-line fishing, speedboat dolphin safaris, champagne island hops and more... or of course you can just while away the afternoon lying beside the one of the two new swimming pools – one designated as a quiet area with Jacuzzi and swim-up bar.

Family is a cherished concept on Castaway. Children are tended to by caring staff at its legendary Kids Club which is open daily from 9am – 10pm. Dedicated children’s dining times, activities and the new family pool with its custom built Fijian ‘waterfall’ and the neighbouring Nuku Marau Grill (offering a variety of Asian and Polynesian inspired cuisine) all provide families with the opportunity to spend quality time together. It’s opportunities like this and the memories that are created around them, that are the reason that we take our kids on family holidays.  They are such special family experiences….in this instance, a special family Fijian experience.  We can’t recommend a family holiday at Castaway Island more fondly….actually I’m not sure we’ll ever get our girls to go anywhere else!!

Iva at Kids Club taught all the children traditional Fijian dance and songs, even the toddlers!  And on the evening of the hosted Management Cocktail Party, we were all treated to a wonderful performance by the children. Dressed in traditional costumes, with the staff, the children all happily sang and danced for us.. and what a treat it was!  Surrounded by parental paparazzi, 1000s of pictures were taken of the Brave Warrior Boys and Fijian Dancing Girls. Every parent was so delighted and touched, and the joy that exuded from the children was infectious. My normally shy 9 year old girls were dancing with Iva and the other kids, smiling and waving to the adoring (and terribly proud) crowd.  It was priceless!
